Eating Crow: An Apology to Glenn Beck
Back in October 2009, I upset many of my conservative readers when I openly disagreed with Glenn Beck over the proposed Net Neutrality rules. Beck was adamant that the proposed policy would allow special interest groups to control what people would see on the Internet. I disagreed because I, like most Americans, believe that the Internet should remain unfiltered for law-abiding adults. We don't want anyone telling us what we can and cannot read, see, or listen to. Like many Americans, I thought Net Neutrality was a good idea, a way to ensure the freedom of information in cyberspace. It turns out I was wrong, and Glenn Beck was, once again, dead on the money.
A group calling itself The Minority Media and Telecommunications Council filed a report with the FCC claiming search engines like Google are biased against minority businesses. According to their Website:
The Minority Media and Telecommunications Council (MMTC) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and preserving equal opportunity and civil rights in the mass media and telecommunications industries. MMTC is generally recognized as the nation’s leading advocate for minority advancement in communications. We strongly believe that the breathtaking changes in communications technology and the new global forms of media partnerships must enhance diversity in the 21st century.
Further, the group argues the SERP results for minority-owned Websites are low because these groups don't have access to start-up costs. But one has to ask how Google is responsible for minority-owned Websites not having access to capitol. Google isn't a bank. And how are search engines supposed to know which minority Website should be promoted to the top of the list? How are they supposed to determine which sites are minority owned? Are they supposed to ask every Webmaster on the planet what race they are?

Glenn Beck apology
Submitted by Guest on Thu, 02/04/2010 - 16:23.Glenn has unusual insights into the workings of this government and his skepticism is well founded. It is nice to see that someone who disagreed with him recognize their error and publically announce that fact. We don't all have to agree with Glenn but those who do agree shouldn't be ashamed of being so. Thank you for speaking up.
