The Terrorist Farmer: Why Janet Napolitano is right
When the DHS released the report titled Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment, conservatives learned we are being targeted by the federal government, singled out as likely to commit heinous acts against people and property. The April 2009 report highlights another group that worries officials: American family farmers. And the truth is, if history is any indication, the report is dead-on accurate.
Arrests in the past several years of radical militia members in Alabama, Arkansas, and Pennsylvania on firearms, explosives, and other related violations indicates the emergence of small, well-armed extremist groups in some rural areas. ~Department of Homeland Security
Let's start with the war in Iraq, a complex web of deceit and destruction dreamed up by the Bush neo-cons. After the better part of a decade, we still hear of "terrorist" attacks, especially in remote areas (codeword: tribal, meaning farming communities). These attacks are rarely the work of ranting fanatics connected with (insert scary terrorist group here). Rather, these are the last throes of a conquered rural community, attacks carried out by family farmers who have been thrown off of the land they've tended for generations. Like farmers everywhere, when the government and the global agribusiness juggernauts seized their land, they had nothing left to live for. So they fought back, not caring if they lived or not.
